The Damp Patch

I love amphibians and their miniature world of fern and puddle and have spent many happy hours as a child (and adult) transfixed by their goings on. To some they may seem ugly, to me they are exquisite – little jewels in the mud. Please do not confuse the beastliness of my ‘Damp Patchers’ as sign of disrespect, for Bertha and Betty are surely queens; albeit in rather grotesque robes.

The damp patch itself, is at the lower end of the pleasure gardens in Stan’s Park (OK – St Ann’s Well Gardens, Hove). I’m sure lots of you know the location. It is beloved by frogs, toads, newts and slugs and snails. They will all make an appearance sooner or later. It is the perfect spot for a little nature study.
